ACCOUNTING/ Finance Manager

The Finance / Accounting Manager will perform the monthly book close processes for small clients, update financial forecasts, and prepare management reporting materials.  Some company administrative tasks may also be required such as capitalization table maintenance, data room maintenance, etc. 

The Finance Manager will get exposure to many different companies across different industries. Many of these industries are emerging, such as biotech and renewable energy. The client base for Sommet Strategies include pre-revenue start-ups, post revenue early stage, and later stage transformation companies. Some are raising seed or venture capital financing, while some are publicly traded. Each day is different and exciting, but the skills developed and used are transferrable across the entire business landscape.

About the Company

The role will report to the CEO / founder of Sommet Strategies, who also serves as the CFO for several of its clients.

Veteran financial strategist and CFO Evelyn Nordin founded Sommet Strategies in 2020 with the goal of helping businesses scale and grow as well as supplement their current FP&A teams. The Sommet team serves as an objective resource that can offer strategic financial and business advice, and do hands-on work needed to help businesses achieve their goals.

Office is located in west Houston, TX near City Centre in a new, modern co-working space, The Cannon.

ABOUT THE POSITION

What the role involves

We are seeking a person who thrives in an ever-evolving environment where no day is exactly the same. This individual has the initiative to truly understand the clients’ needs so they can perform their work with some autonomy after a training period.They have the drive to move into more senior consulting roles and/or a senior financial role for a client company.

The successful candidate will be able to:

·       Document accounting policy and processes for clients

·       Manage / execute relatively simple accounting function for multiple clients, including AP, cash management, and financial reporting

·       Dive deeply into financial data (including past financials) and become a subject matter expert to provide additionalinsights

·       Roll financial performance into forecasting tools to provide updated financial projections

·       Run budgeting exercises and explain monthly variances

·       Identify and research variances to forecast, budget, and prior-year expenses, proactively identifying opportunities for improvement

·       Create presentations that provide insightful analysis, identify required action items, and effectively frame decisions to be made

·       Learn and understand private company capitalization – Cap table management

·       Learn and utilize several cloud-based systems – Quickbooks, Xero, MS Office/Sharepoint, Carta, etc

·       Work, write, and present with professionalism

What you’ll bring

·       Bachelor’s degree and at least 7 years of experience in finance or accounting or a related area. CPA preferred

·       Knowledge of US GAAP accounting

·       Ability to draft a policy or process from the beginning

·       Experience maintaining financial models

·       Superior problem-solving skills – logic and mathematical reasoning

·       Strong Excel and data analysis abilities

·       Strong attention to detail and ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities while maintaining a view of the big picture and adapt to a changing, fast-paced environment

·       Intermediate pc / technical knowledge in order to work across several cloud-based platforms supporting clients in different environments

Hours: This is a heavy part-time position (~25 hours per week) but can change dependent on the candidate.
